Aftermarket (Secondary Market)
The resale market for already-registered domains, where names are bought and sold between owners.
- glossary
The aftermarket (or secondary market) is where already-registered domains are bought and sold between owners, as opposed to the primary market of registering a brand-new name from a registrar. Most memorable, short, or keyword-rich names were claimed long ago, so the aftermarket is where they actually change hands — through marketplaces, a domain broker, auctions, or private deals, often settled via escrow. Prices range from a few dollars to eight figures for a premium domain. Tokenization is a natural fit for the aftermarket: representing a name as a wallet-held asset makes ownership transfer instant and trustless, removing much of the friction that slows traditional aftermarket sales.
