Can You Really Get a Free Domain Name? What the Offer Leaves Out
Compare free subdomains and first-year domain offers. Check required plans, renewal charges, account control, and exit options.

A free domain offer can cover a registration charge, but the offer may require a paid website plan. A free subdomain provides a different arrangement. Wix ties its voucher to selected paid plans. GitHub Pages provides a hosted address and supports separately chosen custom domains.
Start by writing down the complete address, the required purchase, and the renewal terms. Then confirm who controls the registration. Those checks answer the practical question: can this offer support the project after the promotion ends?
This guide evaluates the domain offer. For a complete publishing route, use the free website and domain guide.
The examples are hypothetical. IANA maintains example domains for documentation.
The complete address tells you which offer you have
Compare a separately registered domain, such as example.com, with a provider-hosted address. The first option gives your project a registration to manage. The second option places your project under a domain that another organization administers. A path after the hostname can identify an individual project rather than a separate domain.
GitHub documents account sites under its github.io domain and project sites under a repository path. GitHub also supports custom domains. Free hosting therefore does not establish that a provider gives you a separate domain registration.
Before choosing an offer, ask the provider to identify the registrable name. Find the domain management screen and the registration contact. A website dashboard alone does not answer either question.
A provider-hosted address can suit a temporary demonstration, a learning project, or documentation. A separately registered domain can suit a project that needs a stable address through future hosting changes. That recommendation concerns administrative independence, rather than an unsupported claim about search rankings or visitor trust.

A first-year discount can require a paid subscription
Wix describes a voucher with the initial purchase of selected yearly or multi-year Premium or Studio plans. The voucher covers a year of domain registration. The domain renews later at the regular price. A free registration component does not make the required website plan free.
Squarespace describes another bundle. Eligible annual website plans include the first year of an eligible domain. The promotion renews the domain at the standard rate, plus applicable taxes. Availability and promotion eligibility still matter when selecting the name.
Use the official terms alongside checkout. Marketing summaries can omit the details that determine your particular order. Confirm that the discount appears on the exact name before payment.
Treat these offers as examples, not a permanent ranking. This article does not publish a retail price table. The amount that matters is the current quote for your selected name, country, currency, term, and extras.

A useful comparison includes the later invoices
Create a comparison with separate fields for the website subscription, initial domain registration, later domain renewal, taxes, and optional services. Mark a missing quote as unknown. Do not substitute an advertised starting price for a renewal quote.
For each offer, answer the following questions:
- Which purchase makes the domain eligible?
- Does the offer cover a new registration, a transfer, or both?
- Which extensions and names qualify?
- When must you redeem the offer?
- What will the domain cost at renewal?
- Which services create a separate recurring charge?
Wix says its voucher requires redemption within two months of plan purchase. The same documentation excludes paid domain privacy protection from the voucher. Those conditions can affect the final order.
Save the checkout summary and the relevant terms with the purchase date. Keep the renewal information with your project records. A later collaborator should understand the obligation without reconstructing an old promotion.
For a longer comparison, use the domain holding cost guide. Include the services that the project actually needs. Exclude unrelated upgrades when comparing the domain component.
Account control determines whether you can manage the domain
Use an account that the intended project owner can recover. Verify the registration contact and the billing contact. Give collaborators suitable access instead of sharing the primary account password.
Check whether the account lets you edit DNS records, change nameservers, manage renewal, and request a registrar transfer. Ask support about any missing control before relying on the domain for email or customer access.
Do not assume that every transfer can happen immediately. ICANN describes circumstances that can block a transfer, including certain recent registrations, transfers, and registrant changes. The registrar transfer policy differs from moving website files or changing DNS.
A provider can also sell website service and domain registration under separate subscriptions. Check each subscription individually. An instruction to cancel the website does not by itself explain the domain renewal status.

A practical exit check makes the offer easier to evaluate
Before accepting the promotion, describe a hypothetical move to another host. Write down how to export the website, identify the new host's DNS instructions, and keep the domain renewal active. Ask the provider to explain any uncertain step.
Then describe a full project closure. Identify which subscriptions require cancellation and which domain records should change. Keep the domain account accessible while completing the closure.
Choose the offer when the project needs the included services and the later obligations fit the budget. Choose a provider-hosted address when a separate registration adds little value. Choose a separate registration when independent domain management matters more than the bundle.
The next action is concrete: open the official offer terms, obtain the renewal quote, and confirm the account controls. A visible zero on the first invoice answers only one part of the decision.
