Namefi vs Doma/D3 vs 3DNS vs GBM: Choosing a Domain Tokenization Platform

An honest, side-by-side look at the major domain tokenization platforms — what each one is actually good at, where they overlap, where they don't, and how to pick the one that fits how you intend to use your domains.

If you're shopping for a domain tokenization platform in 2026, you're probably looking at a handful of names: Namefi, Doma Protocol and the company building it, D3, 3DNS, Domora, WebUnited, and GBM Domains. They all work with tokenized domains, but they do not all expose the same layer or custody model.

This post is our honest attempt to lay out who's good at what. We obviously work on Namefi, so take the framing with the appropriate salt — but we'll try to be specific enough that you can verify each claim yourself.


The Quick Map

Roughly, the platforms fall into three camps:

  1. Owner-facing tokenization services. You bring a real ICANN domain (or register one) and the platform tokenizes it. Examples: Namefi, 3DNS, and GBM Domains.
  2. Protocol layers and registry-facing infrastructure. The platform builds standards, smart contracts, or registrar/registry integrations that other products use. The main example here is Doma Protocol, built by D3; D3 and Doma are not separate competing platform choices.
  3. Specialized sale and liquidity tooling. Auctions, fractionalization, lending, and liquidity can sit on top of—or be bundled into—a tokenization flow. Examples include GBM's auctions, Doma Prime, and Domora.

These categories overlap. Some platforms span more than one. But "what camp does this platform sit in?" is the first question to ask.


What Each One Is Best At

Namefi

Best for: owners who want a real .com/.xyz/.io tokenized on Ethereum or Base, with broad NFT-marketplace and DeFi-lending support, and DNS management that doesn't feel like a step backward from Cloudflare.

Notable: ICANN-recognized domains across many TLDs, on-chain ownership via standard NFTs (ERC-721, so wallets, marketplaces, and on-chain tooling Just Work), full DNS management including DNSSEC, an in-app marketplace, and integrations with on-chain payments (x402). Multi-chain. Self-custody from day one.

Less suited for: people who want a brand-new TLD they don't already own, or people who only want a Web3-native name like name.eth.

Doma Protocol / D3

Best for: developers, registrars, and protocol-level work. Doma Protocol is D3's DNS-compliant blockchain and integration layer for tokenizing domains, synchronizing registrar state, and enabling trading and DomainFi applications across supported chains (Doma protocol overview).

Notable: Doma combines registrar-facing infrastructure with owner- and trader-facing apps. D3 is the company building and scaling this ecosystem through Doma Protocol, so treating "Doma Protocol" and "D3 Global Inc" as independent alternatives double-counts one stack (Doma, D3).

Less suited for: owners who want a platform-agnostic NFT without registrar integration or who do not want to depend on Doma's supported registrar and chain paths. The exact owner workflow depends on the registrar or Doma app used to enter the protocol.

3DNS

Best for: Web3-native owners who want a streamlined tokenization flow and don't need every TLD under the sun.

Notable: ICANN-recognized domain tokenization with a clean, opinionated UX. Active ecosystem partnerships.

Less suited for: owners who need broad TLD coverage or specific integrations Namefi/Doma cover. Worth comparing TLD support before committing.

Domora

Best for: fractionalization use cases — co-ownership of premium domains.

Notable: explicitly thesis-driven around making domains a fractional asset, not just a tradable NFT.

Less suited for: straightforward "I want to tokenize my domain and use it" workflows. Domora is more about a specific market structure than a general-purpose platform.

WebUnited

Best for: owners primarily interested in DNS-mirroring bridges between Web2 and Web3.

Notable: mirror-style integration models between traditional DNS and on-chain naming.

Less suited for: if you want a full marketplace, lending stack, or broad NFT-marketplace compatibility.

GBM Domains

Best for: owners who want to register, transfer, manage, tokenize, privately sell, or auction a domain in one Base-based workflow.

Notable: GBM Domains is a tokenization platform as well as an auction marketplace. It says it holds the DNS domain at an ICANN-accredited registrar on the owner's behalf and issues a token on Base that can control, sell, or redeem the domain. Its published one-time tokenization fee is USD 1, excluding registrar registration and extension fees (GBM Domains).

Less suited for: owners who do not want a wallet- and Base-centered control path, or whose TLD is outside GBM's current support. Verify the custody, redemption, renewal, and supported-TLD terms before moving a portfolio.


Things to Compare (Practical Checklist)

When you're deciding between platforms, the marketing pages won't tell you which is right. These questions will:

  • TLD coverage. Does the platform support the specific TLDs you care about (.com, .io, .xyz, .art, ccTLDs like .de/.uk)?
  • Chain coverage. Ethereum mainnet, Base, Polygon, others? Where does the NFT live? Where is gas paid?
  • NFT standards. Standard ERC-721? That matters for marketplace compatibility (OpenSea, Blur, Magic Eden, etc.) and on-chain lending.
  • DNS management. Can you manage DNS in-platform? Use external nameservers (Cloudflare, Route53)? DNSSEC supported?
  • Lending / collateralization. Can you borrow against the tokenized domain on existing money markets, or only inside a platform-specific silo?
  • Marketplace compatibility. Will Blur, OpenSea, etc. show the listing, or is it only visible inside the platform's own marketplace?
  • Custody model. Self-custody (your wallet, your keys, your problem) or platform-custodied? Both have trade-offs.
  • Renewal flow. Who pays the registrar? How is annual renewal billed? What happens if you stop paying?
  • Exit path. If you ever want to de-tokenize and go back to a plain registrar setup, can you?
  • Fees. Mint fee, marketplace fee, transfer fee, renewal fee, gas. Add them up for your specific scenario before you commit.

If a platform's documentation doesn't make any of these clear, that itself is a signal.

A Word on "Best"

There is no universal "best" platform. The right answer depends on:

  • What TLDs you care about.
  • Whether you're an owner, a developer, or a marketplace.
  • How much you value self-custody.
  • Whether you want to use the domain as DeFi collateral or just hold it.
  • How much you trust any single platform.

We obviously think Namefi is the right answer for a lot of owners. But the best thing you can do is try at least one besides us. If we're better, you'll know after a side-by-side. If something else is better for your use case, you should use that.
